Chicago Soccer Tumblr To Follow

I’ll be contributing to a new Tumblr based around the history and culture of soccer in Chicago, Peel1909 (named after a founding father of the sport here in the Windy City).

Obviously there’ll be a lot about the Fire on it, but the city’s past pro teams will be featured regularly too. Give the Tumblr a follow and a reblog if you’re interested.

Storify: The Fire's First 15 to 100

Very nice use of Storify by the Chicago Fire, illustrating the first 15 Fire players to reach 100 appearances for the club as midfielder Marco Pappa is set to hit that mark this weekend.

This shirt (which, oh, I will own come payday) makes me proud to call myself (half-) German. I know race relations in professional sports are sketch to begin with, and soccer has a massive problem with this, but I think Germany’s come a long way, and I think this shirt is a very elegant way of illustrating that. (Granted, Mario Gomez is like a quarter Spanish, but let me enjoy this.)

AS Roma and Zaglebie Lubin bring soccer back to Wrigley Field in Chicago on July 22nd 2012, for the first time since 1984. And for some reason, the powers-that-be seem to think putting the two teams supporter sections right next to each other is a great idea…

Eric Hassli has done it again.

Remember his unbelievable hit from last year? Well, it wasn’t a fluke. Eric Hassli pulled it off again in the first leg of the Canadian Championship finals between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC last night. In injury time, Hassli’s right-footed strike had so much power that it actually made you feel for the net, nevermind the goalkeeper.

"What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love."

miniboro:

The inspiration for this piece came from Del Piero’s farewell message to the fans of Juventus, specifically the part where he said – “No colour will ever be brighter for me than black and white”
With this is mind I wanted to do an illustration that was monochrome and minimalist. The emphasis being on the player himself, with only a suggestion of the black and white stripes of Juve in the background.
This illustration will be available as a print and t-shirt just as soon as I can add it to the shop. But for now let me know your thoughts, give it some love, reblog it etc
