Bandeira soccer cartoon of the week: Diego Maradona
Soccer writers claim that Diego Maradona was the only player who single-handedly won his country a World Cup trophy. For a decade, the short, stocky Argentine sliced through opposing defenses with incredible strength and close control. Off the field, he became embroiled in drugs scandals, underwent gastric bypass surgery, and hosted a tango show before coaching Argentina to a World Cup quarterfinal in 2010. Was Diego the best player of all time?
I had the good fortune to see Roger Milla play in USA 94 at Stanford Stadium. The game I attended (Cameroon 1 – Russia 6) was extraordinary for two reasons.
Firstly Milla’s consolation goal meant that he became the oldest player to appear and score in a World Cup Finals (he was 42 years and 39 days old). Whilst in that same match, Russia’s Oleg Salenko became the first and only player to ever score five goals, quite a game.
Anyway i digress, the dance steps shown in Cameroonian colours are a nod to Millas famous goal celebration, whilst the bottom left of the illustration is meant to represent the corner flag markings etc.
The EURO 2012-inspired illustrated postcards by Simon Evans
Rooney. Malouda. Zlatan. Cristiano. All will bring their talents to Ukraine and Poland in less than 100 days for EURO 2012. Artist Simon Evans sent us these brilliant “illustrated postcards” that he created as part of a larger project for Goals 5-a-side Soccer Centres. Focusing on the goal celebration, Evans captures the emotions of the stars from England, France, Sweden, and Portugal, respectively.
